I have set a date for the Shepherd's Rest meet next April. Limited choice of dates due to Easter being early again but the weekend is booked for 12th to 14th April (weekend before Easter). Can stay longer if you wish as the campsite is open all year round. In case anyone hasn't been, this is a joint Thumper Club/Irish Sidecar Owners event but is very informal and all are welcome. This is the venue https://shepherdsrestpub.com/ (https://shepherdsrestpub.com/)

On next years calendar Steve.
Thanks.
Dave.

Excellent Steve :)

Looking forward to it :)

already looking forward to it

I'll be there.

Hi Steve
I would like to come to Shepherds Rest as I failed last year due to family commitments, but I don't fancy camping as my knee is now totally shot. Do you know of any B&Bs in the area that may be worth a try? A hostel would do or a room in a pub. Basically anything near by.
Cheers
Ian

Nothing what you would call "near by" I am afraid Ian. The nearest would be Draperstown, which is about seven miles from the pub. If sleeping on the ground is a problem I might be able to arrange a larger tent with proper NATO camp bed for you at this end. Space for camper vans (or even caravans) if that is an option for you.

Hey Steve. What aout the small 'shed' at the end of the camping field. It does have bunk beds!

Already booked Steve

Hi Steve
What a very kind offer. The problem I have is that I can no longer kneel down so pitching a tent or getting onto the floor is just not possible for me. Please don't go to any trouble but if a larger tent with a NATO cot is available that would do nicely thank you. However if not then I don't mind booking into a B&B and travelling to and from the site.
Thanks also SteveD for your suggestion of the shed. What a very nice forum this is.
See you at Shepherds Rest.

Hi Ian, when Tim first mentioned the Shepherds Rest as a location for the NI Thumper Club rally, I looked into local accommodation for Pat & I, but the only place available was an Hotel in Draperstown, which is a bit of a trek in the early hours...so I decided to take my old campervan with a bike on the back...and have done for the last few years.
It's better to be 'on site' at these meetings...plus you can have a few drinks in the pub or spend the evening in the little cottage with the peat fire, then stagger back to the camping field.
Dave.

Hi Dave
Thanks for the tip and I certainly wouldn't want to miss the craic! A peat fire and lots of bike talk sounds wonderful and a real tonic. I appreciate your concerns also for my comfort in consuming alcohol but as a committed teatotaler (I know it's a dirty job but someone has to do it) I skip those needs.
Thanks
Ian

Hi guys anybody up for a Holyhead to Dublin ferry over to Shepherds Rest this year rather than Liverpool to Belfast. I refuse to ride my motorcycle into Scouse land. Cheers BradXT (Cliff)
-
Remember to take some Euros if you do - docks tunnel needs 10 Euro in rush hour or 3 Euro outside (still worth it to avoid Dublin city centre) and you need one Euro for the toll half way up the M2 unless you stay off the motorway.

I'm looking at going that way, same as I did with Boyd a few years ago. I'm probably catching the afternoon sailing on Thursday and returning on the Monday afternoon, but I'll be getting a flexible ticket in case plans change.
Stena Line are doing 25% off until midnight 15th January, so it's working out at £107 return.

Sorry i have not responded to your post earlier Trev, but I have not been on the site for a good few weeks. What time Holyhead ferry are you looking to catch on the Thursday and the Monday and I will look to book the same times if you have no objections. We can meet up in Holyhead and travel up to the Sperrins together, again if you have no objections. Cheerz Cliff
PS Guzzi Steve Many thanks for the tip about the Euros. I will remember to have a crisp 10 Euro note stashed in my jacket. Cheerz

14:00 Thursday, and 14:50 on the Monday.
No objections at all - glad of the company. We may have another traveling with us, but he's yet to confirm.

Yes, I'm good to go for this now. ;D I did gave a bit of a medical issue and thought it may preclude me from going, but got good news last week, phew.
I've missed the bargain ferry prices but it looks like the full fare is only £120 so I'll book the same times as you guys....

Durrr, You wouldn't ride through scouse land, the ferry leaves from the Wirral.
-
Not booked yet, but ill most probably go on the overnight from Birkinhead to Belfast on the Thursday night, and back Sunday night.

.....and now it's potentially bad news again. I had a letter from the hospital this morning >:(. My attempts to do this seem to be cursed, but I'm still holding out hope :).

Potential destination for a spin out on the Saturday http://ballymoneyoldvehicleclub.co.uk/event/bovc-classic-vintage-indoor-outdoor-show/

Another option for Shepherd's Rest entertainment, especially if weather not good to go too far :-

Cheers Steve. Two options there, which could both be done in one day. Im now booked to come overnight from Birkinhead, arriving Friday morning.
-
Ferry booked. Travelling over with Paul on his Enfield 535 Continental GT and meeting Trevor at Holyhead. BradXT [Cliff]

Ferry finally booked, and they're doing 25% off again, so £92 return means more beer money ;).
I've booked the 2pm from Hollyhead to Dublin on Thursday afternoon and the 2.50pm return on the Monday.
Really looking forward to it now ;D

Looks like we are going to have great weather all weekend.
-
Just seen the forecast - dry !! Surely some mistake, think I'll pack waterproofs just in case.

Dry - but COLD! Leave out the waterproofs and pack an extra sleeping bag!
-
it looks like I wont make it this year have a great weekend lads :D

Well, what another great weekend! Still recovering today from the effects of too much Guinness, too little sleep and a solitary pickled onion (thank's Mark! ;))
A big thank you to Steve for organising the event and to Colin and the staff at the Shepherd's Rest for their warm hospitality as always. And thanks to everyone who came along - hope you all enjoyed the weekend and the rideout on Saturday despite me getting completely lost at one point. Weather was dry but cool and very windy at times - I didn't envy Pete, Trevor, Paul and Cliff's journey down to Dublin today! Hope you all made it home safely.
Until the next one
Tony
ps - I think Colin has posted a few photos on the Shepherd's Rest Facebook site.
-
The trip to Dublin today was grim. We didn't enjoy it one bit, but at least we got there in one (soggy) piece.
-
Yes, the trip back yesterday was pretty horrible - about as much fun as measles in fact :-\. It wasn't much better once we got back to Wales either, the winds along the coastal A55 were really nasty, strong swirling gusts that sent the bike reeling all over the road.
Didn't detract from a great weekend though, and thanks to everybody who organised it. ;D

As per Rossco's comments. Despite being ill with a chest infection, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole weekend. Though it was blooming cold all weekend. The six of us on the Birkinhead ferry had a quiet trip home, with myself, Simon, and Rick having a bit of breakfast at the Raven truck/bike cafe outside Whitchurch on the way. First proper trip anywhere on the Himalaya, and I am well impressed :)
-
Great to see you all over. Was a brilliant weekend. Work on Monday morning was a shock to the system though - could have done with a day off to catch up on sleep! See you all again in August if not before.
-
Many thanks to all involved in organising another great weekend !
-
A cracking weekend again as usual, thanks for the organisation, looking forward to next years already.
-
Yes the Irish weather didn't let us off again. Very soggy and blowy on the way down to Dublin and not pleasant, particularly with Paddy in his truck pulling off the hard shoulder straight out in front of me on the M1 with lotsa traffic in the outside lane! Cheerz Paddy. Plus my brand new Forma Adventure boots also leaked liked a sieve. But twas a good weekend. Thanks to Steve for organising and to Tommy & Chris for Saturdays ride out. And thanks to Peter, Trevor & Paul for their company and friendship on the journey to Shepherds Rest. See you at The Red Lion if not before. Cheerz Cliff

A great weekend again. First time at the Shepherd's Rest for me since 2012 when I went over with our great friend Boyd. Thanks to all those who organised things and to all of you for making it such a good occasion.
I'm glad everyone liked the Interceptor. It made it worthwhile taking it all that way. I think it's run in now, after 808 miles over the long weekend Thursday to Monday.
With that and the Himalayan being so well received, Royal Enfield are really looking good for the future.
Thanks again all
Trevor

Yes, I was very impressed by both your Interceptor and Tim and Simon's Himalayans.
I was pretty pleased with the way the Jawa went too, though the journey back on the A55 in all the wind showed up it's limitations as a dual carriage way cruiser as I was struggling to hold 60 at times. Fuel consumption also dropped to 45 mpg from the normal 60!
Perhaps I may add a Himalayan to the stable at some point. Mmmmmm

Thanks to all for great weekend at Shepherds Rest. My first time in Northern Ireland and won't be my last! Great country and great/freindly people. Special thanks to Guzzi/Dneiper Steve for organising and Tony and freinds for spectacular if windy ride out on the Saturday. Landlord at Shepherds Rest was brilliant also. Hope to see you all again in Wales in August. Cheers Paul (Conti).

I told you you'd regret selling the Silver Star......

I'm caught on the horns of a dilemma Ian. I like old fashioned, simple bikes, but the older I get, the more I find maintaining them to be a pain, both physically and metaphorically! I must apologise for nor taking you up on your very kind offer to come and look at your bike lift. I've been vacillating between an easyrizer lift and a hydraulic bench, but have finally order the later. I hope it makes bike maintenance less of a chore...
-
bit late but thanks all for a great weekend. 200 mls from shepards rest to belfast..not bad going???.saw some great scenery along the coast. he's to next year.
-
Considering the Shepherds Rest is 40miles from Belfast, 200 miles is a good detour ;D
