SRX shortass project
« on: August 03, 2012, 07:32:51 PM »
Hi,Just thought I'd share the plans and progress of my project...

I bought the SRX600 back in 2010 and spent the first 6 months or so fixing oil leaks and getting the bike road legal. From there I have been collecting bits ready to convert it into the bike I have always wanted!
I had a SRX400 monoshock as my first proper bike 15 years ago and loved it. As I was still young and reckless I parted company and progressed through bigger faster bikes right up to an R1 which eventually became my trackday bike. I realised that I'm actually an idiot on a bike and simply go too fast everywhere and that I needed to kerb it or get locked up, crippled or dead-ed. The problem is that most newer bikes are just not good road bikes in my opinion. They either handle great but go too fast, or the pace is perfect and they handle poorly or they just have no soul, so I decided to build my own. It seemed that what I crave was a good handling, enjoyable pace, soul and individuality.

Anyway after much consideration I decided that a big single, with a descent chassis and suspension combined with good looks is what is needed and a return to the SRX seemed a good place to start as I always wanted to modify my 400 when I owned it. I also really like the idea of the supermono cup racers as I would eventually like this bike to work on a trackday.

I have since purchased a 1992 Kawasaki ZXR400 which I have broken and sold everything except the upside down forks and wheel, brakes and yokes and also the rear wheel, swingarm and brake. I have also just got a second SRX to aid with building up a chassis. I have now begun stripping down parts and modifying the swingarm to fit the frame and take the twin shocks.

I have done a photoshop picture to show the vision and the dream which I have attached. I have loads of design issues still to solve but it gives a good representation although I am going to go back to a standard exhaust layout and also have decided to add a nose fairing. I have been researching chassis design and I intend on using this to improve the handling.

I will keep updating this until it is finished - if anyone has tried something similar I would love to see pics and and hear about any problems they had to solve. Also any hints and tips.  I will kee posts abit shorter in future!

Cheers, Dieter
