My SRX Project
« on: December 22, 2012, 06:37:22 PM »
Evening all, sorry its been a little quiet since my intro thread, been trying to suss out the problem with the Yam which caused it to be laid up in the first place.

Here's the bike as picked up a couple of weeks ago:

As you can see, pretty much the entire bike (apart from the forks, headlamp bowl and exhaust) has been painted black. Quite a lot of rust is poking through in parts of the frame and most of the bolts and fasteners are heavily corroded, so a fair amount of new ones will be drafted in as replacements when I strip it down and repaint it. (Kayla, you may be getting a faily large list of bolts for ordering ;) )

But before I started off on that track, I thought it best to actually see if the bike could be got into a sound running state first. I dropped it off at a local shop to give it a good going over, which firstly showed that the only part of the bike not showing signs of rust from being laid up for a few years was (thankfully) the tank.

After putting a new battery on, and a new plug in it, then cleaning the carbs and putting fresh petrol in the bike was coaxed into life. It runs cleanly when cold, but when hot it appears to have a weak spark, which cannot cope with igniting the fuel coming through and just kills it. Similarly a sniff of choke at any point just wets the plug and you are kicking away for nothing.

Its already had new plug cap, replacement coil and new reg/rec so now its time to test the ignition pickup and cdi. Any idea what the weak spot could be here?

presumably the reg/rec was replaced because it wasn't charging?
Battery and working reg/rec are not needed to start/run the engine

from the information you have provided, 2 things spring to mind.... running too rich when hot (stuck choke plunger, or not seating properly are the prime reasons here)
stator windings breaking down once hot... several places where you can get them rewound

CDi units are fairly robust, and if its triggering ok (which it sounds like it is) then this unit will be the last thing to worry about.

do check all the wiring from the stator/pickups to CDi , prone to damage and connections to corrosions

if its a uk bike and has a sidestand switch this is another area where you may experience problems... check for corrosion and correct switch operation... disconnect switch if in doubt.

Service manual gived resistance readings for stator windings and pickup coils

check for correct adjustment of automatic exhaust valve lifter... measurements in service manual.

good luck with the project.... if you're looking for ideas on what can be done to SRX's there's a lovely refurb in Practical Sportsbike (Jan issue) and mine will feature in the Feb issue (out on Jan 17th)

Thanks for your help there steve. I've got a copy of the manual now, so will print it off and take it along to there with the notes from your advice and see what we find.

Cheers
Dave.
