Well I never....
« on: May 13, 2021, 05:56:47 PM »
I went out on one of my 'bike and hike' trips today where I have a lovely ride out to a nice location and then do a walk of up to five miles before coming back to my bike and brewing up a cuppa and having a sandwich. Today I took the Suzuki GN along to the Tissington Trail in Derbyshire and parked at the Tissington Station car park for a walk along the disused railway line to Parsley Hay which is a round walk of 4 miles.

On the way there I went along the Via Gellia, well known road from Cromford to Newhaven, used and enjoyed so much by bikes over the years. The Suzuki wouldn't behave at full throttle openings (it is a 250 so we're not talking warp speed here) stuttering and coughing. I was able to ride around the problem and it really only got to be a pain when going up hills. I determined to explore the issue when I got home and not let it spoil a good day.

When I got home I removed the carb and could hear a rattle from the float chamber, which turned out to be the main jet which had come unscrewed from its holder and was lying in the bottom of the float bowl! Amazing that the bike ran at all, but obviously none of the other circuits in the carb were affected which is why I could ride around the problem by feathering the throttle to avoid main jet.

All in all I was pleased with the little Suzi as it clearly just got on with the job and didn't throw a hissy fit. Tough little bike.

Good to hear you sorted the issue Ian. Bike and hike is one of my favourite ways to spend the day too. I quite often bung the walking boots in the top box and go of into the Cotswolds or the peaks or, well anywhere that takes my fancy really. I use the AllTrails phone app for walking...

It just demonstrates that the main jet only has an effect at full throttle. Which is why when rebuilding a carb I usually put an oversized main jet in and get the rest of it running properly before thinking about main jet size - contrary to usual advice.

Talking about Suzukis. A few years ago I restored a GSX400 twin. The engine was kn_ackered so I had the crank metal sprayed etc etc. I run it in correctly and after about 1500 miles, I was out one day going for a local jaunt and on my way home the engine made a funny rattling sound. I took it steady as I was only about a mile from home. On stripping the engine down, I found that the crank had snapped in two for whatever reason, but carried on going!!! I just wonder how many other bikes would have done the same or thrown the crank through the casing 🤔
