Rebuildus interruptus.....
« on: August 09, 2023, 10:17:42 AM »
I've been devoting most of my time recently to building the Triumph-Greeves but a bright morning dawned so I thought I'd pop out on the XBR. I haven't ridden it since I rebuilt the carb some while ago as it was popping and banging - the main jet and emulsion tube above it were full of debris. There I was thinking all was solved.... but not only being very reluctant to start, it won't pull more than about 4,000 rpm. Very disappointing. It also pops on the overrun leading me to suspect a weak mixture. So the carb will have to come off again.

There I was counting on Honda reliability......

Any suggestions?

hmmm ...  not quite off topic but this week has been devoted to all things garden, culminating this afternoon with, i was hoping, 3 hours grass cutting ... my wonderful honda 'easy start' (which it has done perfectly for the last 3 years) mower took 1/2 an hour to get fired up, carb blown out with air line, fuel drained, plug cleaned and 1/2 a can of 'bradex' easy start and it was still 20 pulls to get it going , so my good old 'reliable' Honda is going to need some serious fettling, i'll start with a new plug.

so i feel your pain Ian...

Sorry Ian - I can't offer any help from my personal experience. I've  had several XBR's and fortunately never had any running issues unlike my Ducati. I can only suggest checking the basics . If the fuel is E10 or just oldish it might be worth changing it. A new plug and checking the cap and or  connection is always worth a go as well.

The XBR is all buttoned up again and started first push of the button - encouraging as it was very reluctant previously. It settled down to a nice even idle so hopefully is now ready for a trip of more than 5 miles and at speeds greater than 40 mph......

result!!
and as it happens ... a new plug in the mower was all that was needed to restore the 'easy start'
the downside is .... an afternoons mowing instead of bike fettling ...

More proof foe my theory that bikes just sulk if not used regularly and punish the rider for their neglect. The only sure cure is to give them what they want; regular thrashing for no other reason than pure pleasure.
