SZR rear brake caliper
« on: February 25, 2008, 09:45:04 AM »
Can someone please tell me whether the caliper is inbound or outbound of the mounting plate please. I have both but the caliper has no thread which would tend to suggest that it ought to sit outbound of the plate but that doesn't leave a lot of clearance between the disc and the plate. Alternatively, it would need bolting from the inside which would mean that the whole wheel would have to come off to remove the caliper.

Many thanks

(who is asking why he starts these sort of things)

Bolts on the outside of the plate, and yes it does run quite close, but not as close as the Grimeca body to wheel hub on the Skorpion.
You can just about tell from this

Haing ridden the Skorpion properly now I can why the brakes need sorting, absolutely no play, its either on or off. Each time I blipped the throttle when lightly braking the front end dipped.

Why do we do it to ourselves Steve..why???

Yep: the front caliper and rear pump is where I am at at the moment and that works quite well. Also shorter dogs 125mm helps things. I am still to get a Brembo MC for the front and the caliper on the rear can wait until the TZR wheel goes in. I don't suppose you know of a tame machine shop that could do some spacers and and an offset for the strocket carrier without bloodshed?

I suspect there a couple of people on here who might be able to help. I had my SRX spacers made up in SS as it saves having them plated.
Is the rear caliper a direct replacement ?

What I have is a 3.5 x17 TZR wheel, an SZR Brake mounting plate and Brembo caliper to fit. It looks to me as if I need one spacer either side of the brake plate  and an offset on the sprocket carrier to take the chain out to where it ought to be and a spacer from the carrier to the swingarm.

The caliper is not plug an play with the OE wheel but ought to be a goer with the TZR item

PS I have plenty of space between caliper and wheel on the Skorpion as it is now.

Mine has score marks where a small stone has stuck between the caliper and wheel hub, so its tight.

It took another look  :o but now I see what you're talking about. The gap I am talking about is between the caliper carrier and the disc. I guess so long as it clears it..there is not going to be any lateral movement  - better not be ;D

Hey Steve......that SRX looks an absolute treat......really nice job.....I've been wondering about wire wheels for a while....and trying to imagine what they'd look like, also there's a chap near me who bought one of my SRX's wants to go down that route....any chance you can publish a parts list/guide/pitfalls/notes on the project?

Steve,
Bit of mixture of parts

SRX Monoshock
  • Front Forks. I used twinshock forks, and Alan made up shims, but the mono forks would be better
  • Yokes
  • Clip-ons
  • Front Brake System
  • Rear Cush Drive

TDR Parts
  • Front Hub
  • Rear Hub. The bearings in the rear hub need to be changed to accomodate the SRX wheel spindle.

SZR Parts
  • Rear Caliper an carrier. Need to weld a lug onto the swing-arm to hold the caliper bracket

Other
  • The rims are Akronts from Hagons, I had the last 2.75 rim, so you may need to go larger.
  • Spacers to get alignment
  • Deep pockets for the lacing and rims

Wouldn't have the SZR spacer betwixt caliper plate and hub perchance?
