Lifted from Projects.

.... I loved the dr big i had, well, i loved the way the engine felt, but hated the slow ponderous handling and weight. the exact opposite of the katana experience. one has a brill chassis and an awful motor, the other has an awful chassis and a brill motor, why not link the two......

Hi John, I surprised at your comment on DR BIG...I've modified mine over the years and it's one of the best all weather / all terrain bikes you can get. As regards the handling I pulled the forks through the yokes by 13mm and raised the rear by 70mm which sharpens it up nicely.
Here's a little movie of it in action taken a couple of weeks ago...try not to laugh.

At last...the link worked.
The bike that died was a BMW 1200 GS!
Pete on the Tiger stalled in deeper water (about 2') and had to put his feet down, filling his boots, as the water was over his knees, luckily it restarted and made it to dry land with his engine management light on.

gs died because he was going too quick and probably hadnt prepped the bike for the water. as for the big, it was a big heavy old barge. i loved the engine and how it went, but always found it heavy, and particularly top heavy. ive currently got an r1150gs and whilst it undoubtably weighs more than the dr big, it doesnt feel like it is, because it carries its weight better, it helps that its got a lot more power and delivers it better.  ive a dr650 which whilst its not got quite the power of the big, is so much lighter than the big that its a completely different riding experience. i suppose its just what youre used to, i used to dwarf my big, my mrs said i made it look like a moped, but i just couldnt get on with it aside from the engine. so that was the only bit i kept, but, as i paid only 300 quid for it and got 800 quid from the bits i sold whilst retaining engine carbs electrics ignition etc, i figured that it wasnt such a bad thing....

i do recall a trip on the big to edinburgh alongside a gsxr1100 mounted mate, we both sat on the m74 at 100mph for mile after mile and he was more windblown than i was, and then on the return trip via selkirk and moffat down the backroads, the dr showed him a clean pair of heels, even so, it felt hard work wrestling it round the twistys.
