Stella Alpina anyone?
« on: November 08, 2018, 07:23:57 AM »
For some years I have had a hankering to do the Stella Alpina rally in Italy but have never quite plucked up the courage. For those not familiar with the rally it takes place on the second Sunday in July and runs from a town in Italy called Bardonechia. It is informal and free to join in and participants ride as high as possible up the Col du Somellier, buy a badge and ride back down.

Has anyone done it? Would anyone be interested in doing it?

I figured if I commit the idea to TC then I increase my chances of actually doing it. I'd be going on the mighty Enfield and I don't ride fast so it would be a week's job I should think. Some camping and some B&B, I've not really thought it through yet. However it happens it will be a laid back affair, but hopefully enjoyable.

Let me know if you're interested and if not please make sure you bully me in to actually doing it!

Hi Ian - been to the Stella 3 times - 1992, 1995 and 2005. First time on an XBR, then on a 20 year old Yamaha xs650 which struggled at anything over 55 mph (don't ask!) and the last time on a Kawasaki W650. First time I went in 1992, quite a few entrants were camping in the town near the ski lifts where there was a great party atmosphere - in 2005 hardly anyone was camping and most were staying in off-season skiing apartments which were cheaply available. I enjoyed all my trips and liked the informal nature of the event - I think it was more fun doing it on a road bike and was lucky that the weather was kind on each of my visits - probably best to give yourself at least a week if you want to stay off the boring roads and make the journey there and back part of the holiday.

Hi Tony

Many thanks, sounds like you've had some great adventures getting to the Stella.

Hopefully I will be following in your footsteps next year.
