I went out on one of my 'bike and hike' trips today where I have a lovely ride out to a nice location and then do a walk of up to five miles before coming back to my bike and brewing up a cuppa and having a sandwich. Today I took the Suzuki GN along to the Tissington Trail in Derbyshire and parked at the Tissington Station car park for a walk along the disused railway line to Parsley Hay which is a round walk of 4 miles.
On the way there I went along the Via Gellia, well known road from Cromford to Newhaven, used and enjoyed so much by bikes over the years. The Suzuki wouldn't behave at full throttle openings (it is a 250 so we're not talking warp speed here) stuttering and coughing. I was able to ride around the problem and it really only got to be a pain when going up hills. I determined to explore the issue when I got home and not let it spoil a good day.
When I got home I removed the carb and could hear a rattle from the float chamber, which turned out to be the main jet which had come unscrewed from its holder and was lying in the bottom of the float bowl! Amazing that the bike ran at all, but obviously none of the other circuits in the carb were affected which is why I could ride around the problem by feathering the throttle to avoid main jet.
All in all I was pleased with the little Suzi as it clearly just got on with the job and didn't throw a hissy fit. Tough little bike.
