2 weeks gone!!!!!!!!!!!!
Done it! (almost)
Frame & swingarm std. Swing arm bearings? seem ok.
Complete front end found at the back of a shed from another old machine,
consisting of---
Pair of tzr forks & yokes (re-worked by Maxton-engraved on the side), a tzr single disc braided stainless line + double piston caliper (has been modified as per photos to a quick release set up, just pull the pin & calipers are off!). Up top are a pair of home made clip ons (with a bit of surface rust that will be cleaned off time permitting), an AP racing master cylinder & std tacho coupled to std cable drive. Front tyre is an old 120/70 MTR01 on a 3.5" fzr400rr 17"wheel.
Ps, the tzr head bearings seem to fit ok?
Rear shocks that were on the bike seemed to work ok, but as it's going racing, I thought a nice new pair of Hagons as a treat? (£90 + p&p)
Rear wheel is std 18" with a part worn (not sure how old?) 120/90 ME99. The rear caliper is one of the old front std pair complete with used pads & seems to fit perfectly? fitted with an odd rubber brake line from the goody box. Chain is a 520 (non o ring) chosen from of a selection off a shelf, std rear sprocket but a 15 tooth front (with a 14 & a 16 going as spares)
A couple of pieces of alloy plate were utilised for some bodged up rear sets? & set into these are a couple of foot pegs + brake pedal & gear change pedal from a zxr 750 (made up gear linkage & std srx rear master cyl. mounted in normal position but the length of the rod was too long so it was hacksawed off to length, bent to 90 degrees & slotted through the brake pedal connecting hole, a couple of washers & a split pin (works fine!)
Have fitted the srx 620 engine from my crashed bike (son, last year at Cadwell) which has sat on the bench since then & not been touched. In fact, it's not been apart in the time i've had it (11 years), & with a bit of luck should still run (if it ain't broke, don't fix it!) This has two Kehin 33mm carbs from the same crashed bike (but these needed a bit of bending back into shape where they had been torn off!, wiped a few bits of grass out & they still look clean, so on they went. Had to trim a bit of the throttle cable outer away but still works fine?
It runs it's spark directly from gen so minimal wiring. Std srx oil tank & plumbing
NO oil cooler, as it's never had one in 11 years ( ANDY!)
Std tank with one of the exit pipes from the tank tap blaked off & the other pipe gravity feeding the carbs via a new straight through on off fuel tap. The tank had to be lifted a couple of inches at the rear to clear the large carbs so a couple of pieces of finest pine (old coffee table) were used & does the job fine!.
The seat unit has been fashioned from a fibreglass seat & tank cover off an old tz 125 (the tank bein cut away completely & a jigsaw wafted around the seat unit. It was a tad low for me so to raise it we have used a couple of 12" pieces of angled ally (from an old window frame) with a shaped piece of plywood under the seat part to support the important bit & also to fix the seat unit to.
The exhaust planned (2 into 1) did not seem viable given the space to play with underneath so we decided to make a complete two into two system ourselves using the front downpipes from the crashed bike, a piece of nice hacked off chrome pipe to take it out from under to the sides & then add a couple of small light cans that were purchased (very cheaply) on e-bay about a year ago. These were then nicely welded together by our local friendly garage man for some tea money!.
Put some petrol in the tank----NO LEAKS!
Put some oil in the oil tank---NO LEAKS!
Put it on the starting rollers (one of the best buys ever made) second gear, let out clutch gently, & what a beautiful noise it made as it started up FIRST TIME!
Warmed it up-- STILL NO LEAKS! really does sound good........
Took it for a gentle run down the street & back tsk tsk tsk (to make sure clutch etc. etc. was working), all seems ok..
So, it's back in the garage being lockwired & preparing some new threads (not sure what colour yet!), I'll have to see what co;our tins I have in shed no.3
Updated pics-------see photos..
Off to Mallory on Wed, all being well, for a test......
