SRX won't run in the wet
« on: June 01, 2008, 06:38:35 PM »
Hi guys,

My 86 SRX cuts out in the rain, I have replaced the coil and it gets me further than it used to ie it got me 4 miles instead of half a mile. After so long in the wet it cuts out when I close the throttle.  Any ideas as to why it does this would be appreciated.

Chris

Is this a UK spec bike ?. (Does it have a grabrail ?). The cutout switch on the sidestand is known causing problems in the wet, if its still fitted then its best bypassed.
I'd also try disconnecting the kill switch, as that may be effected by water, you will need to remove the headlamp to do this.

And if there's no oil cooler.....rain and front wheel spinoff gets straight between the forks and frame....and meets the coil/plug assy.....try a small piece of plastic under the coil to deflect the rain
WD40 on switches and around the coil area

I always had problems with the plug, until I changed to a sealed (NGK) rubber plug cap...

Aye Chrissie,

All the previous and a small flexible rubber mudflap extension to the front mudgaurd. Even with the oil cooler, an NGK sealed plug cap, deflector for the coil and lashings of WD40, the flood from the front wheel can bring the sparks to a halt.

Also, if and when laundering the bike, make sure you flush all the crud out from around the plug area. 'Gert' my first SRX600 had the plug corroded into the head and it had to be dug out!

Keep boppin', Bill
