Another XBR racer project
« on: May 10, 2009, 09:53:38 PM »
This weekend I finally dragged my old XBR out of my father's garage and moved it across to my house to start rebuilding it as an Earlystocks racer. The bike was last used on the road in 1999 and last raced in 1998. It looks a mess where its stood in a leaky garage for the last 10 years but it is complete. I just need to strip off the road gear, give it an overhaul and do a few mods to conform to the Earlystocks rules.
Engine is XBR with an XL barrel and Wiseco piston, 40mm dellorto carb, HRC cam and R&D valve springs. I have a (now rather tatty) Tony Cook exhaust to go back on it. Wheels are 18" Astralites, front brake is an EXUP disc with GSXR 4-pot caliper. Swing arm is a JMC item and the rear brake is (probably) RD250/400. Seat unit is a Harris F1 item originally intended for an Ikusawa framed XBR.

Any chance of swapping a TZ saddle (or cash) for the Harris seat unit? I own an Ikuzawa and Harris won't get back to me about making a seat unit for it.

Yours in desperation.

Looking good, I took mine to bits yesterday, 2nd race at Darley Moor and the thing wouldn't stay in 2nd.

There seems to be plenty of Dominator gearboxes on Ebay for half the price of a single gear new from Honda, I just hope the ratio's aint too far out.

I've got an XR500 RFVC 10.25:1 piston on it's way from America and once I can get the bloody flywheel off the crank (wish I had a puller) I can drop the kickstart only XL crank and flywheel in.

The cam is sat in the kitchen ready to be posted off to Joy Engineering for the HRC spec grind.

The exhaust I have is total crap, anyone one got something sporty spare that they want a few quid for?

Have you tried ringing Harris? try and speak to Steve Harris if you can. Things might have changed since I got mine, it was 10 yrs ago but they had to make it for me then. I'm not inclined to part with the seat unit at the moment unless I can find one that looks OK and fits well, the XBR seat rails are relatively wide which causes problems.

Second gear is the one thats usually different, the XLs are a slightly lower ratio. It may not make a lot of difference though. On a fast circuit I used to run the gearing fairly low to get enough drive out of the slower corners. On a 34 tooth rear sprocket with a 130/66 rear tyre I ran it to 8K in 5th to get a reasonable top speed.

I have a genuine Honda puller but it snapped, its a big old taper and holds together well! IIRC you can use a rear wheel spindle, wind it in and then give it a good clout, it needs to be shocked off. You may need to put a small spacer in there if the thread isn't long enough. I'm going to have the same problem but I'll be running without the flywheel with a Piranha ignition.

That exhaust did look a bit dubious. I'm going to run my pipe as it is for now but I want to get some new bigger downpipes downpipes made up and then run twin silencers.

The number plate is the original, OY= Rickmansworth. Nowadays the DVLA probably reserve all numbers like that to sell off at a premium.

I've got a 90s CBR600 race seat that will go straight on (already cut to fit an XBR) and an early 90s TZ saddle that should fit with possibly just a small amount of trimming at the nose (it tapers in very sharply). You can have these, all the postage costs and the sum of money that you think covers your inconvenience. I really am very keen to get my hands on a proper saddle for my bike. In the first few years I owned it I emailed and snail-mailed Harris about this and apart from one vague letter early on, I have heard nothing from them. After about the seventh attempt I gave up.

Ignore the finish on the black seat, it's covered in dust:

And yes, the hole in the back of the black saddle is for an XBR tail light  :)

Well Earlystocks are changing the rules for 2010 so the single cylinder class will be no more. Now I have to decide what to do with the XBR (and the new, very expensive leathers  :'()

hmmmm....!

I'm feeling your pain!

You could build up the motor into a slightly hotter, lighter chassis.  It looks like there will be a good supermono turnout next year, tho the class may be running with another club....

Tho I agree, it would require a bit of a radical departure from the initial plan!
