New SRX
« on: November 08, 2006, 10:58:25 AM »
I have now done @ 400 miles on my new SRX. It's actually 1 year older than my old SRX but has covered fewer miles. It seems to go well and I am happy overall with it. only two slight problems which I am working on [carburation and charging]. I am still in the process of moving bits from my old one to the new one and then I shall decide what to do with the old one. Sorn, break, keep on the road or sell.

I am considering swoping the 400 engine for a 600 so if you are thinking of breaking yours bear me in mind!

Does anyone know if I will need to swop any other parts - carbs or exhaust?

Boyd, before you consider of having my old engine it would probably be best to come and have a ride on the bike and see what you think. Give me a ring if you would like to discuss it. Mart

The exhausts headers look the same, so I think they will fit, the carbs look the same, but definately have different size jets and probably have different needles, I havent meassured the inside bores on the carbs to check sizes.

So apart from the initial cost of the replacement engine the cost (famous last words) may not be horendous!

CDi is different, I'd try and source 600 carbs rather than rejet the 400 ones.

Yes, I forgot that, the CDI has got a different part number, but the 600 engine will run with it (haven't done enough miles to find out how well) I have 1 x 600 cdi, and 2 x 400 cdi's, all have different part numbers.

My 600 engine ran on my 400 wiring loom. (plugged straight in)

The CDi will have to be from an import 600, harness is different from the UK model.

I know this is the wrong thread on the wrong part of the forum but... I know my 1JK srx600 engine plugged straight in and ran connected to my 1JL japanese import srx400 wiring loom, carbs and CDI.

I'm not an expert but I thought the difference in looms was a sidestand switch on some models ? I have now bought srx600 carbs and CDI on ebay, carbs look the same externally, Cdi has the same plugs as the 400 one.

Your 600 engine would indeed plug straight in, its the CDi's which are are different. As you say the home market 1XL has wiring to accomodate the sidestand switch

Just to gibber on a bit longer, both the engine and (400/600) CDI's plugged in to the 400 loom.

I have 2 x 400 cdi's, they have different numbers on the outer case ?

600 engine started fine on 400 CDI, I would like to dyno 600 engine with the 400cdi fitted to check for any gains (fat chance)

Just to murky up the waters even more, i ran a 400 lump in my '6' for 6 months over a winter, all the ancilliaries were '6' , ran fine. apart from a lower top speed, in fact i think that 400 is a sweet little engine, it revs so well (less reciprocating mass?) you hardly notice the lower power output. I wonder if anyone has tuned the 400?
Any differences in the CDi's must be pretty minor, if i had 60 quid to spare i'd take my bike up to Straight Line Racing in kings lynn and bung it on the dyno and map both CDi's,
I know some of the srx racers use magnetti/marelli or boyer units so it is probably a fairly simple curve anyway.

Boyd, to return to your original response, Why not sell the 400 and just buy a 600? It would be a lot easier. Mart

I'd agree about the 400 motor being much sweeter than the 600, it was great for hammering around on but I got bored with changing gear all the time (lazy rider). I toyed with building a motor with the 400 crank and 600 piston, it would come out at around 500cc, but I sold the bike before I got even close to sorting it. The cases would have to be opened up and I wasnt sure if the little ends were the same size.

Hello Big Chap-

Get my mail?  Thanks for the rear-wheel spacers.  Lovely, you're  a diamond

Does anyone know if I will need to swop any other parts - carbs or exhaust?

Exhausts are the same (mono pipes are nice if you can get em), but I'd go for 600. the carbs may look the same, but are quite different (well, the 400 carbs I got with the motor from mart, and the 600s couldn't be used for spares- I think the floats are the same tho)

Cheers for now
