Speedometer dials : redesign for MPH/KPH
« on: June 24, 2016, 03:25:06 PM »
Hi all,
I need to have a new speedo dial manufactured for my Suzuki Goose. The original one only displays in kmh and it is a legal requirement in N Ireland to have a speedometer displaying in both mph and kph.

Does anyone know of a company that can manufacture dials? The Goose clocks were only used on another Suzuki model, the GSF 400 and these clocks have the same issue.

I have had some correspondence from a company called clocksndials but no price yet!

Thanks,

Ron

Hi Ron, what about trying one of the speedometer specialists who work on old British speedos.
Magnetic Clock Repairs, Chris Andrews, 07771 515118
Smiths Speedometer Repair, Mick or Jim, 07757 371462
A.E. Pople, 07824 884434
A Gagg & Sons 0115 9786288
Worth a try, as if they can't help, maybe they can point you in the right direction. There was a period a few years ago when MOT centres in NI were really fussy about the subject of mph and kph on speedos, but I've noticed in recent years, that they don't even look at speedo or ask about it, so personally, as long as your headlamp points the right way, I wouldn't worry about it  ;)

Good thinking Timbo and certainly plenty of options there, thank you!

I guess I just worry I get one of those really officious MOT testers who sets out to see what he can fail a bike on. I know when I put the Yamaha SR500 through last year they took a close look at the speedometer (which I had changed to a dual one) and also headlamp alignment.

Cheers,

Ron

Great idea Ian, that is definitely worth a try if I can find a match! Love it!

Timbo I have 2 SR500 Yamahas, one is 1982 and fully restored and MOT'd with spoked wheels and twin leading front brake etc all done by myself and the second is a very early 1976/7 one that has never been registered in UK as it came in from Texas and I'm just sorting that one out at the minute, have also done spoked wheel conversion this time with disc braked front rim.
If I can figure out how to post up pics I will do!

In Bangor by the way...

I've had a couple of bikes with kmh only speedometers before, and never had a problem with an MOT.

I always worked on

50 = 30mph
65 = 40mph
80 = 50mph
95 = 60mph
110 = 70mph

I know this isn't 100% accurate, but given speedo errors, it's near enough.

Yep, I do it that way too. The other thing I was thinking Ron, is do you use Ards for your MOTs, as that's where they train new MOT testers, and by all accounts, they can be a bit over the top there. I use Mallusk, Balmoral, Ballymena, or Lisburn. Out of those Ballymena is easily the best. They are all sound fellas, into bikes, and I have found them very fair. Also, you can get a bike test there, usually within a couple of days  :)

Hi Timbo,
yes because of the Euro speed limits across "the border" there is a seperate MOT tester's manual for NI.

This has caused me a headache on Jap grey imports because of the daytime running headlights, i.e. no park/sidelight. And the speedo which must display both mph and kmh. If you want a copy of the MOT tester's manual PM me an email address.

Ards is notorious for the apprentice testers but as it is my closest it is a fine balance!
