Oh well
« on: April 17, 2007, 04:26:24 PM »
I've just split the crankcases on my spare SRX. It wouldn't have been necessary if I hadn't dropped a copper head bolt washer and managed to get it to fall between the alternator rotor and the casing, conveniently sliding through the minute slot at the bottom of the casing and into the gear box. The good news is that all the gears all look ok. I found it hard to believe my accuracy with the washer but the susequent strip proved that I was wise to assume I had blundered once again. The bad news is that the last rebuild was done with a pattern cylinder base gasket which is firmly glued to the crank case mouth. I was only going to rectify an oil leak between the head and the cam cover but decided to have a look at the valves while the engine was out. Well worth the effort as one valve seat was burnt and needed to be recut. What with that and the replacement of the inlet tract which had delaminated it should be as good as new. I now know that when the number one bike failed to reach its reserve on ebay it was because God didn't want me to be without a ride during this nice weather. The sun as they say does shine on the riotous. see you all at Wetton. MTF

I suspect that I will find very many more nasty things when I get into the XBR engine that I'm about to strip. It came to me seized solid, which is an unusual state of play for XBR lumps which normally die because things get too sloppy, not too tight.

Perhaps we should start a sweepstake to see who can guess the exact cause of the engine's inability to rotate.

Anyway, glad to hear that your stripdown wasn't a waste of effort.

Cheers
